The Brockville Legion Athletic Club and surrounding running community suffered a devastating loss on Sept 29th of Rowan Dean, one of Janet Wynands’ Under 18 National silver medallist cross country team members. Rowan was just 16 years of age.
Rowan collapsed on a solo easy run. A passerby saw it happen and started CPR right away; first responders worked on him for 2 hours without success. A postmortem found that he had a rare congenital heart defect that they usually see in 50 year olds. There was nothing that they could do. His heart just stopped.
The Legion Club will be hosting a 5k Memorial Run for Rowan at the Brockville Legion Cross Country Meet on Sunday, October 27th at the Memorial Centre at 12 pm.
Brockville Road Runners have been invited by Janet to join them to race, run, jog or walk the 5k to celebrate Rowan’s love of running. Janet of course is a longtime member and supporter of the BRRC, notably as race director of the popular Freeze Your Buns winter series.
All proceeds from the run will go to establish the Rowan Dean Fund to provide financial support of athletes who share his dream of training and competing.
