Profile of Shane Curless
We are delighted to feature the profile of Shane Curless , 30, a new member of our club.
Shane is keenly interested in fitness and added outdoor running relatively recently to his regime of gym, biking, soccer, etc.
Shane found he enjoyed road running and entered all Brockville Road Runners virtual runs to date in 2021. Shane ran some impressive 5K times in the virtual FYBs series. He also completed 100K, reaching Cornwall in the May Challenge.
Interestingly due to Covid restrictions, Shane has yet to run his first in-person race. We hope that he, along with the rest of the club, will have that opportunity in the TIP runs currently scheduled for October 16, 2021.
Where are you from originally and what brought you to this area?
I’m originally from the UK. My mother is originally from Brockville but met my Dad while, during his military career, he was based in Canada. When he finished his military career we all moved here.
How long have you been running?
I have been going to the gym and using treadmills since August 2018 – when the first lockdown hit I needed some way to keep up with my routine. So I started outdoor road running, and discovered that I actually enjoyed it and had a fairly decent pace.
Do you run for fun or competitively?
For fun – the only person I compete against is myself.
Why do you run?
To burn calories and keep my fitness at a decent level.
Recent memorable running moment? Not necessarily in a race.
Finishing the 100km Cornwall May challenge. It was hard work and a lot of fun!
Best running achievement?
Also finishing the Cornwall 100km virtual challenge.
Greatest running disappointment ?
Running one of the FYB runs I did not allow myself enough time between breakfast and the run… made for an uncomfortable run and less than optimal time.
What is your favorite race distance? Why?
10k – Because it allows for a good balance between time and distance.
A notable race moment or most memorable race?
I have yet to participate in a race, only virtual runs so far.
Why did you join BRRC?
To find other runners, for inspiration and to share my own achievements.
Ever been injured? How did it happen?
Not so far, touch wood!
What is your favorite race?
I have yet to participate in a race.
What does your daily or weekly workout consist of?
Usually treadmill-based HIIT Monday/Wednesday/Friday during the week when the gym is open. Weight/strength training Tuesday/Thursday. Will usually do a hike of varying distances on Saturday or Sunday.
Additional input or comments?
I also enjoy long-distance cycling, hiking, and soccer.
Thanks Shane for your participation. (TonyD; July 2021)
